A well-organised warehouse saves time, space and money. Yet many businesses start without a clear plan, resulting in an inefficient layout. In this article we go through setting up a warehouse in seven steps, from the first idea to the finished installation.
Step 1: Map out your goods and needs
Start with the question: what am I going to store? The type of goods (pallets, boxes, long materials, bulky items) determines the kind of shelving you need. Also map out the weight, dimensions and turnover rate of your products.
Step 2: Measure your space accurately
Note the exact dimensions of your space: length, width and especially the free height. Take into account obstacles such as columns, doors, windows and the position of lighting and sprinklers.
Step 3: Determine the routes and work zones
An efficient warehouse has clear aisles where forklifts or pallet trucks can manoeuvre smoothly. Reserve enough space for loading, unloading and order picking. The layout should follow the natural flow of your goods.
Step 4: Choose the right type of shelving
Based on your goods and space, you choose between pallet racking, shelving racks, wide-span shelving or a combination. A professional design helps you make optimal use of the available height, because valuable vertical space often remains unused.
Step 5: Make a scale design
A technical design shows in advance how everything fits and how many pallet positions you achieve. This prevents expensive surprises and lets you know exactly what you get before anything is delivered.
Step 6: Delivery and professional assembly
The shelving is delivered and assembled according to the EN 15512 safety standard. Correct assembly with the right anchoring is crucial for the safety and lifespan of the installation.
Step 7: Inspection and commissioning
After assembly, a check follows to guarantee that everything is built safely and according to standard. Your warehouse is then ready for use. Do not forget that shelving must also be inspected periodically to remain safe.
