Under the European standard EN 15635, as a user of warehouse racking you are required to have a rack inspection carried out annually by a qualified person. MagazijnService performs professional warehouse racking inspections across Belgium — for all brands and types of racking.
Why is rack inspection mandatory?
The European standard EN 15635 explicitly places responsibility for periodic inspections with the warehouse operator. Forklifts and pallet trucks cause wear and damage that is not always visible. A timely rack inspection prevents collapses, personal injury and production loss.
Risk classification (EN 15635)
| Level | Status | Required action |
|---|---|---|
| GREEN | Elements in good condition, capacity not reduced | Monitor only — check at next inspection |
| ORANGE | Damaged elements found | Intervention required very soon — replace damaged parts |
| RED | Immediate safety risk | Immediate action — unload the rack and take it out of use |
How often should you have your racking inspected?
EN 15635 requires a minimum annual inspection of all warehouse racking by a qualified inspector. Additional inspections are required:
- After a collision — immediate inspection after damage caused by a forklift or pallet truck, regardless of the scheduled cycle
- After an incident or near-miss — such as a pallet falling or instability
- After modification or extension — whenever the racking configuration changes
- When damage is spotted — whenever an employee reports damage
In warehouses with heavy forklift traffic, we recommend a six-monthly check to catch risks early.
What is checked during a racking inspection?
- Overall condition of the racking
- Condition of pallets and load units
- Storage channels against technical drawings
- Suitability of forklifts and pallet trucks
- Presence and legibility of load capacity signs
- Working practices of warehouse staff
- Order and cleanliness in the aisles
- Presence of upright protectors
- Condition of the floor (cracks, subsidence)
- Play and deformation within limits
- Identification of damaged elements via inspection tags
- Immediate reporting of acute risks
What do you receive after the inspection?
- Official inspection certificate signed and stamped by the inspector
- Detailed inspection report with findings and recommended actions
- Inspection tags on damaged parts (green / orange / red)
- Register of inspections carried out, for your records
- Technical recommendations for repair, replacement or safe use
- Safety guidance for your PRSES
Legal obligations (EN 15635)
- Annual inspection by a qualified inspector
- Appointing a PRSES (Person Responsible for Storage Equipment Safety)
- Carrying out a risk assessment
- Replacing damaged elements — repairs only with supplier approval
- Displaying load capacity signs visibly and keeping them up to date
