What is a mezzanine floor?

A mezzanine floor is a self-supporting steel intermediate level installed inside your existing warehouse or industrial building. The structure rests on steel columns and creates a fully usable additional floor level — without foundation work, without a building permit in most cases, and without structural changes to the building.

The terms mezzanine floor, intermediate floor and entresol all refer to the same product.

When is a mezzanine floor the right choice?

  • Ceiling height: your warehouse has a minimum free height of 4 metres (recommended: 5–7 m)
  • Space constraint: you need more storage or working space without additional rent or construction
  • Flexibility: you want a relocatable investment that moves with your business
  • Speed: a typical 50–150 m² installation is completed within 3–5 working days

Do I need a building permit in Belgium?

In Belgium, a building permit is generally not required for a mezzanine floor, as it is a self-supporting, relocatable structure that is not structurally anchored to the building. Workplace safety regulations (Codex over het welzijn op het werk) and European standard NBN-EN 15635 do apply.

We recommend consulting your local municipality or an architect if you are unsure — regulations can vary slightly between municipalities and regions.

Annual inspection required (NBN-EN 15635)

Every Profima mezzanine floor is delivered with a CE certificate and an identification plate showing the maximum load capacity (kg/m²), floor area and delivery date. Under NBN-EN 15635, the structure must be inspected annually. MagazijnService can arrange your annual inspection on request.

Frequently asked questions about mezzanine floors in Belgium

What is the minimum ceiling height needed?

A minimum free height of 4 metres is required. At exactly 4 metres, the clear headroom above and below the floor is approximately 1.7–1.8 m. A free height of at least 5 metres is recommended — this gives comfortable 2.0–2.2 m clearance on both levels.

Can a mezzanine floor be relocated?

Yes — this is one of the key advantages over a permanent extension. The structure is fully demountable and can be reinstalled in new premises. Profima's approval is required and a new structural calculation must be produced.

Is a mezzanine floor fire-safe?

Steel is non-combustible. For fire resistance class R30 or higher, a fire-protective coating can be applied. Exact requirements depend on your building's fire classification — consult your local fire service or insurer.

How long does installation take?

A floor of 50–100 m² is typically installed in 2–3 working days. Larger areas of 150–300 m² take 4–7 working days. Production lead time after ordering is 3–6 weeks depending on the order schedule.

Are used mezzanine floors available?

Yes, Profima regularly holds used mezzanine floors in stock — ideal when budget is a factor. Price and availability on request. Used floors are inspected and provided with a new CE certificate.

New vs used — what is the difference?

New floors are manufactured to your exact dimensions with full warranty. Used floors are typically cheaper but come in stock dimensions and may require adaptation. Both are supplied with CE certification and full documentation.
