Pallet racking systems are heavy industrial structures subjected to daily loads and forklift traffic. A damaged rack can collapse — with serious consequences for staff and stock. That is why the European standard EN 15512 requires regular inspection and maintenance of all warehouse racking in Belgium.
What does the law require?
- Carry out a formal annual inspection by a qualified person (PRSES)
- Conduct regular visual checks by in-house staff (recommended: weekly or monthly)
- Report and repair damage immediately
- Maintain an inspection log recording dates, findings and repairs carried out
What is checked during an inspection?
| Component | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Uprights (columns) | Bending, dents, corrosion |
| Beams | Deflection, damaged connections, safety locks |
| Base plates | Floor anchoring, corrosion |
| Safety features | Rack end protectors, vertical alignment |
| Load notices | Presence of mandatory load capacity signs |
Green, amber and red classification
- Green — no action required, normal wear
- Amber — repair required within 4 weeks, restrict use
- Red — take out of service immediately, repair or replace
How often must you inspect?
- Formal inspection: at least once per year
- After a forklift collision: immediately
- After relocation or modification of the racking: always
- After any serious incident: immediately
